Washington Winch is a Parks Victoria recreation site in Victoria’s High Country, 15 km E of Swifts Creek.
The Washington Winch is a unique part of Victoria’s Cultural Heritage and a relic of the logging industry. It was left onsite, intact with engine, spars and cabling still rigged for work. The massive logging engine and winch drums were manufactured by Washington Iron Works in Seattle, USA and imported to Australia in the 1920s It was originally used in Western Australia to move large Jarrah logs before making its way to East Gippsland in 1940 after the Black Friday fires. Ezard Enterprises purchased the engine in 1959 and employed it at the head of the Little River catchment in the 1960/61 logging season.
