Explore the country

Shaped by gold, cattle & snow

01

Gold

From the 1850s, gold drew diggers up the Ovens, Buckland and Mitta valleys. Towns like Beechworth, Harrietville and Omeo grew out of the rush, and old races and mine relics still turn up beside the tracks.

Cattle

For more than a century, cattlemen drove their herds onto the high plains each summer. The slab and corrugated-iron huts they built still shelter walkers, riders and four-wheel drivers today.

Snow

The same ranges hold Victoria’s alpine resorts and its highest summit, Mount Bogong. In winter the high roads close and the country belongs to skiers and snowshoers.
